Following a press conference that felt like Edgar Allan Poe writing a UFC promo under an active volcano, Shakur Stevenson (23-0, 11 KOs) is back for round two (cue drum roll). The three-division world champion who will face William Zepeda (33-0, 27 KOs) for a WBC lightweight showdown at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens on Saturday was at his taunting best with a host of antics aimed at Zepeda during their recent press conference. However, this time, he might just have pushed Zepeda a little too close to the edge.
“I’m prepared, I’m ready. I try to stay stuck in the present. I’m not worried about tomorrow. I’m co-confident because I put the work in. This is my destiny. These people can’t take nothing away from me. Jerry is going to kick Tom’s a*s. Just watch,” Stevenson said confidently during the weigh-in.
Stevenson weighed in at 135 lbs while challenger Zepeda was a tad bit lighter at 134.6 lbs. But it was evident that the weigh-in was merely a mask for the pure theatrics that took place on stage.
‘Sugar’ or ‘Outlaw,’ as Turki Alalshikh calls him, was trying to instill in himself an almost fake sense of confidence and bravado. He continually taunted Zepeda by putting a finger across his face and even dancing in front of him to ensure that he was covered from the media lens. One could even say that he was trying to make the viewers not label him a Jerry-esque fighter (Alalshikh’s description for a runner).
But this disrespect was not one that Zepeda was going to let slide, with him maturely choosing to voice his annoyance on fight night.
“I all respect. I had a finger lifted up to me. That’s disrespect. Tomorrow, we’re going to put the receipts up to you,” he said.
Despite all the drama, Zepeda certainly has the support of his promoter and Golden Boy boss, Oscar De La Hoya. While it can be said that De La Hoya was reigniting his beef with Stevenson (which was rather evident during the press conference), he is not misplaced in being confident about Zepeda’s skillset.
“William Zepeda all day, all week, all year. The work ethic is incredible. Zepeda has the ability and the punch output to keep Shakur on his toes. Aim for the body. Shakur is a little soft,” De La Hoya said.
