Seemingly everyone wants a piece of YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul after his unanimous decision win over 58-year-old Mike Tyson on Nov. 15 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.
The 27-year-old is now 11-1 with notable wins over big names like Tyson and MMA fighters Mike Perry, Nate Diaz, Anderson Silva, and Tyron Woodley. But Tyson aside, Paul only has two wins over legit boxers under the age of 36 — Ryan Bourland and Andre August.
And while his win over Tyson, who was once considered one of the best boxers on the planet, impressed some, it didn’t move the needle for WBC and WBF female heavyweight, and WBO female light heavyweight champion Claressa Shields.
In fact, after watching Paul’s performance against Tyson, who’s three decades older than him, Shields is confident she could take Paul if the two were in the ring together.
“I don't think Jake Paul has the skills to get inside the ring with me or any of the guys at 154 pounds and up who is ranked in the rankings,” Shields recently told TMZ Sports. “I'm not going to lie to you. 1-10.”
While Paul has built his career on fighting past-their-prime MMA fighters and no-name boxers, Tommy Fury notwithstanding, Shields has legitimately fought her way to the top of the sport.
She’s a three-division champion with a perfect 15-0 record and wins over former champions like Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse, Maricela Cornejo, Savannah Marshall, Ema Kozin, Marie-Eve Dicaire, Ivana Habazin, Christina Hammer, and others.
Many have petitioned Paul to fight an actual boxer similar in age and weight instead of taking the gimmick fights he’s known for, but since his victory over Tyson, Paul has asked for big-money fights against former UFC two-division champion Conor McGregor and current WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight boxing champion Canelo Alvarez.
It's unlikely Shields and Paul would ever engage in an inter-gender professional boxing match, but perhaps there’s hope the two could spar each other in the future.
