Xander Zayas Faces 'Boots' Ennis in High-Stakes Title Defense
Angela Piazza/Caller-Times / USA TODAY NETWORK

Xander Zayas isn’t playing it safe. In an era where young champions are often carefully protected, the unified WBA and WBO junior middleweight titleholder is doing the exact opposite taking on one of the most dangerous fighters in boxing.

Zayas will defend his belts against Jaron Ennis on June 27 at Barclays Center, headlining a massive co-promoted card between Top Rank and Matchroom Boxing on DAZN PPV.

Behind the scenes, even Zayas’ own promoters admitted this wasn’t the original plan. Todd duBoef acknowledged that the blueprint was to follow a traditional path building Zayas into a star through New York showcases and gradual step-ups, similar to past Puerto Rican icons.

But Zayas had other ideas. “You listen to your guys… we don’t say you got to protect the zero,” duBoef said. Instead of a measured climb, Zayas is jumping straight into the fire.

Champion vs. Destroyer

Zayas (23-0, 13 KOs) is coming off a breakout run:

  • Won the WBO title with a dominant win over Jorge Garcia
  • Unified with a split decision victory over Abass Baraou in Puerto Rico
  • Continues to grow as one of the sport’s brightest young champions

Across the ring stands Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs)  arguably one of boxing’s most feared fighters. The former unified welterweight champion has already made noise at 154 pounds, stopping Uisma Lima in the first round in his divisional debut.

A Fight That Could’ve Waited But Didn’t

Zayas had other options. A unification bout with IBF champion Josh Kelly was on the table a more traditional step in the division.

Instead, he chose Ennis. Even his trainer, Javiel Centeno, initially questioned the move. “Why Ennis?” But after hearing Zayas’ reasoning and studying the matchup he bought in. “He came with that confidence… and that’s all I needed.”

Confidence Built on Growth

Centeno believes the key difference is Zayas’ rapid evolution. “The growth in his boxing IQ has compounded… every fight he’s elevated his game.”

From technical improvements to ring awareness, Zayas has shown maturity beyond his years and now he’s betting on it against elite competition.

Styles Make Superfights

This matchup has all the ingredients of a modern classic:

  • Zayas: Youth, timing, technical growth, championship confidence
  • Ennis: Power, explosiveness, elite-level finishing ability

It’s not just a title defense. It’s a proving ground.

Legacy vs. Arrival

For Zayas, this is about legacy proving he’s not just a champion, but the champion at 154. For Ennis, it’s about arrival conquering a second division and solidifying pound-for-pound status.

In a sport where timing is everything, Zayas is choosing to take his biggest risk early. No tune-ups. No waiting. Just one of the toughest fights available. And come June 27 in Brooklyn… We’ll find out if boldness turns into greatness or a lesson learned the hard way.
