It only takes a second to change everything.
For the tight-knit HBCU sports family, that second came late Saturday night, when news broke that Cameron Woodall, a former Grambling State and Tougaloo College basketball player, had tragically died in a 4-wheeler crash in Raymond, Mississippi.
He was just 26.
According to the Hinds County Coroner’s Office, the accident occurred around 11:25 p.m. on the 10000 block of Midway Road. Woodall, riding an ATV with another individual, lost control of his vehicle and overturned. He died at the scene. The other rider was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Woodall’s death sent shockwaves through Mississippi and beyond. A local legend at Raymond High School before making his way to Grambling State in the SWAC, and later transferring to NAIA powerhouse Tougaloo College, he was more than a basketball player, he was a symbol of hard work, community pride, and HBCU excellence.
“My heart goes out to the family, friends, and many loved ones,” said Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones in a public statement. “Raymond High School and the Raymond basketball community lost a good one.”
Woodall’s journey through HBCU athletics was one of resilience. At Grambling State, he earned respect as a hardworking, team-first player, before making a major impact at Tougaloo. His presence on the court was undeniable. He was strong in the paint, emotionally intense, and deeply rooted in a love for the game.
In the age of NIL deals and viral fame, Woodall represented the heart of what makes HBCU athletics so special: community over clout, pride over ego.
Woodall’s loss is a reminder of how fragile life can be, especially for the young men and women striving to build futures through the lens of HBCU sports. As we celebrate his legacy, we must also protect it, by telling his story, supporting his loved ones, and reminding the next generation of HBCU athletes just how precious every moment is.
Funeral arrangements are still pending.
