Arkansas freshman guard Boogie Fland is expected to make his long-awaited return for the NCAA Tournament after missing nearly two months due to a thumb injury. Initially believed to be out for the season, Fland’s recovery has progressed faster than anticipated, and according to ESPN’s Seth Greenberg, he is set to practice with the team ahead of March Madness. His return could be a game-changer for the Razorbacks, who have fought their way into the tournament picture despite his absence.

Overcoming Injury: Fland’s Road to Recovery

Fland suffered a right thumb injury on Jan. 11 during a game against Florida. He attempted to play through the pain but struggled in games against LSU and Missouri before opting for surgery on Jan. 22 to repair his Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL). At the time, it was widely reported that the injury would end his freshman campaign. However, as the Razorbacks prepared for postseason play, Fland’s recovery timeline accelerated, and he was cleared for practice.

John Calipari, Arkansas’ head coach, reportedly informed Greenberg that Fland was expected to go through full practice without restrictions. If he avoids any setbacks, he will be available for Arkansas’ opening game in the NCAA Tournament.

How Arkansas Has Fared Without Fland

When Fland went down, Arkansas was struggling with an 11-7 overall record and an 0-5 start in SEC play. His absence forced the Razorbacks to adjust, and despite the setback, they managed to go 9-6 in the 15 games without him. Their offensive efficiency improved from 124th in the nation to 72nd, while their defense, already strong, climbed from 32nd to 17th. The team’s ability to adapt has been impressive, but the return of Fland could provide a major boost to their postseason hopes.

The Impact of Fland’s Return

Fland was a key contributor before his injury, averaging 15.1 points, 5.7 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per game in 18 appearances. He was the team’s second-leading scorer and their primary facilitator, leading all major conference freshmen in assists per game. His shooting efficiency—36.5% from three-point range—also made him a vital offensive weapon.

Arkansas has relied heavily on a short rotation in recent weeks, with only seven primary contributors. The return of Fland adds much-needed depth, particularly in the backcourt, where injuries have stretched the team thin. With Adou Thiero also dealing with an injury, Fland’s presence will help stabilize the guard play and take some pressure off his teammates.

Looking Ahead to March Madness

The Razorbacks’ NCAA Tournament fate will be determined on Selection Sunday, where they are currently projected as a 10-seed in Jerry Palm’s latest Bracketology. With Fland back in the lineup, Arkansas could have a higher ceiling than previously expected, especially in Calipari’s first postseason run with the program.

While it remains unclear how much of an immediate impact Fland can make after missing nearly two months of action, his skill set and leadership will undoubtedly be valuable as Arkansas looks to make a deep tournament run. For now, Razorbacks fans will be eagerly watching to see if Fland can help lift the team to new heights on college basketball’s biggest stage.
