Duke star Cooper Flagg finally made his NBA debut, helping the Dallas Mavericks take down the Los Angeles Lakers 87-85 in their first game of the Las Vegas Summer League.
The highly anticipated matchup between Flagg and Bronny James left some to be desired, with the Lakers' second-year player struggling from the field and finishing with eight points on as many shots, and also missing a potential game-winner.
Notably, Flagg didn't fare much better, scoring just ten points on 5-of-21 shooting to go along with six rebounds, four assists, three steals, and one block.
Then again, even though he struggled with efficiency and wasn't necessarily satisfied, Flagg was happy about the win:
“I’m not necessarily worried,” Flagg said, “but I’m not happy with how it went. At the end of the day, we got the win. I would say that might be one of the worst games of my life. We got the win, so that's what really matters to me.”
The reigning first-overall pick admitted that he faced a different challenge in his debut, as the Mavs had him getting the ball up the court and operating as a point forward. Even so, he won't make up any excuses, and he'll just get back to work:
“It’s new for me — bringing it up, handling full-court pressure,” Flagg said. “I was a little tired, but it was good to deal with that, work through some things.”

Flagg missed all of his five shots from beyond the arc and his lone free throw attempt, but he took solid care of the basketball and played impressive defense.
“Shots weren't falling, but that's going to happen,” Flagg admitted. “It's going to be nights like that. It is somewhat new to me. I haven't probably taken that many shots before, so that's somewhat new. I'm going to try and figure it out. But new experience, so I'm excited to keep playing and move forward.”
He won't be the first superstar prospect to struggle from the floor in his Summer League debut, so the fans shouldn't read too much into this game or the final stat line.
