Summer has arrived in college basketball, and that means workouts, camps and coaching staff shakeups. Head coaches are finalizing rosters and filling out their benches, and one familiar face from UConn is heading to a new opportunity.

Mathew Johnson, who served as the video and scouting coordinator for Dan Hurley and the Connecticut Huskies since 2022, has accepted a new job.

Joe Arruda of the Hartford Courant first reported the very enthusiastic announcement from the Princeton men’s basketball account Monday night on X.

"Welcome to Princeton, @_mjtrey!"

Before stepping into the video and scouting role, Johnson started with UConn as a graduate assistant in June 2019. He earned his master’s degree from the University of Connecticut after completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Tampa.

Now, he’ll serve as an assistant coach under Mitch Henderson at Princeton. Henderson had some thoughts on the new hire:

"I'm thrilled to welcome Mat Johnson to our staff," Henderson said. "He brings a championship pedigree, deep roots in our local basketball community, and a clear understanding of what makes Princeton special—both on the court and in the classroom."

Henderson added:

"Mathew's experience at UConn, winning two national championships, shows his commitment to excellence at every level. His passion for player development and his appreciation for Princeton's academic values make him a great fit for our program."

During his tenure in Storrs, Johnson helped the Huskies claim back-to-back NCAA Tournament titles and win the Big East regular season and tournament championships in 2024. Overall, UConn won 74% of its games during his time on staff.

Reflecting on the move, Johnson expressed gratitude for his time at UConn:

"During my time at UConn, I have been fortunate to learn so much about coaching, building relationships, and what it takes to sustain excellence. Yet, after six seasons, my family at UConn since 2018, and I are thrilled to return home to New Jersey as the newest Tigers in the Princeton community."

Dan Hurley, who has led the Huskies since 2018 and compiled 165 wins, including 69 in Big East play, praised Johnson’s contributions:

"Mat has done great things for us the last few years and played an important role in our championship success. He's a hard worker and smart basketball mind who can connect with players at a high level. Mat will do a tremendous job at Princeton as he takes the next step in what will be a long and successful career in coaching."

The Huskies, who were eliminated in the second round of the 2025 NCAA tournament by eventual national champions Florida, will begin searching for Johnson’s replacement immediately.
