The Gonzaga Bulldogs are losing four starters from the 2024-25 squad, and will now be without a key reserve following the news that sophomore guard Dusty Stromer has entered his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal.
"First I want to express my sincere gratitude to my family, Gonzaga University, and the incredible fans who have supported me throughout my two years in Spokane," Stromer said in a statement on social media. "After much thought and consideration, I have decided to enter the transfer portal to explore new opportunities for my academic and athletic future."
Stromer was a top 50 recruit in the class of 2023 who came to Gonzaga and immediately started as a freshman in 2023-24, thanks to a season-ending injury suffered by Steele Venters two days before GU's first game against Yale.
Stromer started 15 games as a freshman before being replaced by Ben Gregg, but the 6'6 wing still averaged 23.5 minutes per game, along with 4.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists while shooting 35.8% from three.
As a sophomore Stromer remained in a bench role after the team's addition of Khalif Battle in the transfer portal, but his playing time dropped dramatically toward the end of the year as he was replaced in the rotation by sophomore wing Emmanuel Innocenti - who provided better on-ball defense while Stromer's outside shot disappeared.
Stromer averaged 22.4 minutes and 5.8 points in his first 22 games this season, but in his final 12 games he played just 8.6 minutes per night, only scoring two points in five games in the month of March.
With Innocenti expected back next season, and the additions of 6'7 senior wing Jalen Warley - who redshirted this season after transferring from Virginia - as well as 6'7 incoming freshman Davis Fogle, it is no surprise to see Stromer enter the portal to look for a new home where he will have more guaranteed playing time for his final two seasons of eligibility.
