Iowa State guard Blake Hinson to miss 2020-21 season due to medical condition

The Iowa State Cyclones confirmed on Friday that junior guard Blake Hinson, who transferred after two seasons at Mississippi, won't play during the 2020-21 campaign due to a continuing medical condition that is not related to the coronavirus pandemic. 

Iowa State refused to divulge additional information in accordance with HIPAA. 

Hinson averaged 10.1 points and 4.6 rebounds in 28 games -- 26 starts -- in his final season at Mississippi. 

In the official school statement, Iowa State head coach Steve Prohm said: 

"In his two and a half months with the program, Blake has become a valuable member of the team and a leader within our program. The most important thing to all of us is his well-being. He will be returning to Florida to be with his family at this time but will continue his classwork. We fully support his desire to return home and look forward to his return when the time is right for him. I know that when he returns, Blake will continue to be a leader this season and next season when he is back on the court with our team."

Hinson made headlines in June when, per ESPN, he admitted that the Confederate symbol featured on the Mississippi state flag had a role in his decision to leave Ole Miss for Iowa State. The state retired that flag later that same month.
