MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia basketball will be without high-scoring guard Jayden Stone due to injury to start the season, first-year head coach Darian DeVries announced Friday.

“Jayden Stone will be out for a period of time, we’ll see how long that is,” DeVries said. “It’s an upper-body injury. That’ll be day-to-day as we move forward.”

Stone transferred in from Detroit Mercy this offseason after being one of the top scorers in the country in 2023-24. His 20.8 points per game not only led the Titans but also ranked 22nd in the nation.

He also led Detroit Mercy, which won only a single game, with 2.7 assists per game and 63 made three-pointers. Stone also pulled down 5.6 rebounds per game. The Australian native recorded three games over 30 points and scored 25 points against Big 12 foe Cincinnati this past year. He shot 42% from the field and 32% from three.

Stone began his collegiate career at Grand Canyon.

In the charity exhibition game against Charleston last month, Stone finished with two points in 19 minutes, shooting 1-5 from the floor and 0-2 from range. He also had four rebounds, an assist and a steal.

West Virginia opens the 2024-25 season on Monday, Nov. 4 at home inside the WVU Coliseum against Robert Morris. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
