According to AthlonSports.com, Legendary South Carolina Women’s Basketball coach Dawn Staley has turned the South Carolina Gamecocks into one of the most storied women’s college basketball programs in the history of the sport. An important reason for that success is the caliber of players she’s been able to recruit, develop and send off to the WNBA.

Two of the best players to ever make their way through the program just so happened to be part of history alongside Staley — current Las Vegas Aces forward A’ja Wilson and Atlanta Dream star Allisha Gray, both of whom played key roles in South Carolina’s first national championship during the 2016–17 season.

Last week, the WNBA announced that Wilson and Gray were named the Western and Eastern Conference Players of the Week, marking Wilson’s first of the season and the first of Gray’s career in the East.

The announcement drew a heartfelt reaction from Staley.

She tweeted, “When you get an early am text from one of your former [South Carolina] players [Markeshia A. Grant] about 2 other former [South Carolina] players and their success….[South Carolina] winning!!!”

A’ja Wilson, who’s coming off an MVP season in 2024, put up 27 points, 10 rebounds, 4.5 assists, three steals, and 3.5 blocks per game.
