Welcome to March. It’s that wonderfully chaotic time of year when brackets are busted, hearts are broken, and absolute superstars remind the rest of us exactly why they have that title. If you tuned into Saturday’s Round of 64 clash between Notre Dame and Fairfield, you didn’t just watch a basketball game. You witnessed a one-woman wrecking crew named Hannah Hidalgo completely take over.
The No. 6 seed Fighting Irish marched into the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio, with a massive chip on their shoulder. Coming in with their lowest tournament seed since 2009, Notre Dame had plenty to prove. And prove it they did, thoroughly dismantling a scorching-hot Fairfield squad 79-60.But let’s get right to the headline here, because what we saw on the court was nothing short of historic.
Let’s be real for a second: Fairfield’s guards are going to be seeing Hannah Hidalgo in their sleep for the next three weeks.
The junior phenom didn’t just stuff the stat sheet; she rewrote the record books. Hidalgo finished the afternoon with a jaw-dropping 23 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and eight steals. Yes, you read that right. Eight steals. By the time the third quarter was winding down, she was legitimately flirting with a quadruple-double—a feat no player, man or woman, has ever accomplished in the history of the NCAA Tournament.
With her eighth swipe of the basketball late in the third quarter, she officially shattered the Notre Dame women’s basketball single-game NCAA Tournament steals record. She was everywhere all at once, anticipating passes before they were even thrown and turning Fairfield turnovers into instant offense.
Fairfield didn’t come into this tournament as a pushover. The Stags boasted a stellar 28-4 record, had won 11 straight, and hadn’t lost a step in months. For a few brief moments in the first half, they showed flashes of why they were a dangerous No. 11 seed.
Notre Dame started the game hot, fueled by Hidalgo’s early lockdown defense, building an 11-8 lead. But the Irish offense went ice cold in the final minutes of the first quarter, missing four straight shots and going scoreless for nearly three minutes. Still, they clung to a 17-12 lead heading into the second quarter.
Then, head coach Niele Ivey worked her magic. After Fairfield clawed back to make it a game, Ivey called a brilliant tactical timeout with just over a minute left in the half. The Irish responded by unleashing a furious 4-0 run in the final 69 seconds, taking all the momentum—and a 36-24 lead—into the locker room.
If Fairfield had any hopes of a Cinderella comeback in the second half, Notre Dame slammed the door shut immediately.
The Irish came out of the locker room breathing fire, ripping off a quick 9-2 run. While Hidalgo was busy playing passing-lane pickpocket, grad student Iyana Moore decided it was her time to shine. Moore hit two massive, momentum-crushing and-one layups in the third quarter, heavily contributing to her 15-point performance.
By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, Notre Dame had completely suffocated the Stags. The Irish outscored Fairfield 36-25 in the second half, building a lead that stretched past the 20-point mark. Senior Cassandre Prosper also joined the double-digit party, pouring in 17 points to keep the offense humming while the defense put on a clinic.
Notre Dame entered this tournament at 22-10, battle-tested by a grueling ACC schedule but perhaps a bit undervalued by the selection committee. This is a program that hadn’t lost a Round of 64 game in 17 years. Tradition matters in March, and this roster clearly understands the assignment.
They played with the desperation of an underdog and the swagger of a powerhouse. The offense was balanced, the defensive intensity was suffocating, and their transition game was a blur of navy and gold.
With Fairfield sent packing, Notre Dame punches its ticket to the Round of 32. They will face the winner of the No. 3 seed Ohio State versus No. 14 seed Howard matchup.
If they play Ohio State, it’ll be a true road game environment against a heavy favorite. But if Saturday taught us anything, it’s that you do not want to bet against Niele Ivey’s squad when the lights are brightest. And if Hannah Hidalgo continues to play like she has a personal vendetta against the opposing team’s backcourt, the rest of the bracket better be put on high alert.
Buckle up, college hoops fans. Notre Dame is just getting started.
