With action in the transfer portal slowing down, it is time to take a closer look at how each P4 school did during this cycle. Up now are the Cal Golden Bears

The skinny: As head coach Justin Wilcox enters his eighth season in Berkeley, the Golden Bears are coming off a 6-7 season that did finish with their first bowl game since 2019. There was some talk during the season regarding Wilcox’s future with Cal, but now he brings his 36-43 record into 2024. And with that the Golden Bears were once again aggressive in the portal as they hope the new additions will strengthen their position during their first season in the ACC.

Total # entries into portal: 27

Total # of scholarship players who entered portal: 22

Number of scholarship players who withdrew: 0

Key losses: WR Jeremiah Hunter (Washington), LB Myles Jernigan (Louisville), DB Kaylin Moore (UCLA)

Key additions: WR Tobias Merriweather (Notre Dame), WR Mikey Matthews (Utah), TE Corey Dyches (Maryland), DE Teddye Buchanan (Cal-Davis), DB Marcus Harris (Idaho)

Final thoughts: Cal added some nice pieces throughout their roster. After losing top receiver, Jeremiah Hunter, to Washington, they responded by signing Tobias Merriweather and Mikey Matthews. Merriweather’s addition received more publicity, but don’t underestimate the value that Matthews will provide. Also, two FCS defensive additions worth watching are Teddye Buchanan and Marcus Harris, who should both prove to be vital to the unit this season.
