Background

Marvin Harrison Jr. is the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame and former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison Sr. He was born and raised in Philadelphia where he played high school football at St. Joseph's Preparatory.

Harrison Jr. was one of the most prolific high school football players in Philadelphia Catholic League history, setting receiving yards and touchdown records. His efforts also contributed to St. Joseph's winning three state titles.

After high school, Harrison Jr. committed to Ohio State University as a four-star recruit. He didn't see much playing time as a freshman given all of the receiving talent at OSU. Once he got his opportunity, however, he never looked back.

Harrison Jr. had an outstanding two-year run (sophomore and junior seasons) in which he posted back-to-back 14-touchdown and 1,200-plus receiving yard seasons. He was a two-time Unanimous All-American, two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection, two-time Richter-Howard Receiver of the Year winner, and one-time Fred Biletnikoff winner during that stretch.

Strengths

  • Built in a lab, looks exactly how you want a WR1 to look at 6'4" and 205 lbs
  • Pro-ready releases, rare shake for someone of his build. A single coverage destroyer
  • Route-running technician: runs the entire tree and runs it well
  • Remains physical late into the route and at the catch point, can use strength to muscle his way open. Uses his body to box out defenders
  • Rare ball-tracking ability and body control. Catches difficult passes in all types of ways: back shoulders, sideline snatches, over his shoulder, etc. Catch radius is ridiculous
  • Possesses deep speed to threaten defenses over the top, reportedly reached 22.2 MPH on the GPS
  • Math-changing presence: defenses constantly worry about where he is on the field. Sees true double teams that give his teammates favorable matchups
  • Production profile is excellent, a very clean projection to the NFL

Weaknesses

  • Not a tackle breaker, top-heavy in how he runs. Contact balance suffers because of this
  • Occasionally puts his gear in neutral on some of his routes
  • Speed builds, acceleration isn't his calling card

Final Thoughts and Chicago Bears Fit for Marvin Harrison Jr.

It's always dangerous to label a prospect "can't miss" or "generational." I don't care. Harrison Jr. is as close to a sure thing as you will find in the NFL Draft.

He possesses the ideal size, strength, and athleticism paired with top-tier NFL-level nuance as a route runner and ball winner. If you could create the prototypical WR1 to funnel your pass game though, he would look like Harrison Jr.

I expect him to be considered one of the best players at his position sooner rather than later. His game should translate to the highest level quickly. It's still early in the process, but I'd be shocked if I dole out a higher grade to a non-QB this draft cycle.

Harrison Jr. would immediately give the Chicago Bears a top-five receiving tandem in the NFL. He and DJ Moore would comprise as lethal a 1a-1b combination as you will find across the league.

The Bears need to take a long hard look to see if their current quarterback situation would be the right one to maximize that good of a receiver setup. Yet, I couldn't blame anyone who couldn't resist creating such a dominant duo.
