As the 2025 college football season creeps closer, recruiting for next year's class is heating up. On Friday, news broke that one of the top linebackers in the Class of 2026 has reopened his recruitment.
Jamichael Garrett, a Baton Rouge, Louisiana native, is a four-star prospect and ranked as the ninth-best player in the state. Although he's from Baton Rouge, Garrett plays high school football at Central High School in Oxford, Alabama, located just 75 miles from Auburn.
Last season, Garrett recorded 91 tackles, including 9.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and one interception. In the 2023 season, he had an even better year statistically, tallying 26.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, one interception and three fumble recoveries.
Garrett announced his decision to decommit from Auburn with a short but respectful message: “BLESSED for everything the Auburn Community has done for me.”

Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports added context on Garrett’s recruiting profile, writing: “The 6’2", 205-pound LB from Central, LA had been committed to the Tigers since July. He holds a total of 33 offers.”
Back in April, Garrett told Chad Simmons of On3 Sports: “If anything changes, it will be before the season starts. Auburn is still the school I am committed to, but I am looking at my options and I will take visits. I want to give some of these great schools a chance since they are recruiting me so hard.”
Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze is preparing for his third season with the Tigers. He’s gone 11-14 overall, including a 5-11 record in SEC play, and lost his only bowl game in 2023.
Among the top programs pursuing Garrett are Ole Miss, led by Lane Kiffin, as well as Texas A&M, Miami and LSU. He plans to visit Texas A&M on June 20, following a weekend trip to Miami.
