Aggies To Hire Alabama's Holmon Wiggins As WR Coach
USA TODAY Sports

Texas A&M is swinging big for its next receivers coach under Mike Elko.

According to reports, the Aggies are expected to hire Alabama's Holmon Wiggins for the same role in College Station. Wiggins has been on Nick Saban's staff since 2019, helping turn a handful of pass-catches into future NFL talents.

Wiggins, 43, perhaps is best known for his work with DeVonta Smith in 2020. Smith became the first receiver since Desmond Howard in 1991 to win the coveted Heisman Trophy after finishing with 117 catches for 1,856 yards and 23 touchdowns on the way to a national title.

Other receivers who have transformed into household names at the NFL level include Jerry Jeudy, Jaylen Waddle, Henry Ruggs III, John Metchie III, and Jameson Williams. Each player totaled over 1,000 yards once in their careers under Wiggins' direction.

A&M has never had a concern regarding recruiting receiving talent, but development has been a concern. During the Jimbo Fisher era, no receiver finished with over 900 yards or six touchdowns. Two tight ends led the Aggies in receiving yards in 2018 and 2021, respectively.

During Wiggins' time in Tuscaloosa, Alabama made it to the College Football Playoff three times and won the championship during the 2020 COVID-19 season. He previously coached at Illinois State (2006-10), Tulsa (2011), Memphis (2012-15) and Virginia Tech (2016-18).

Wiggins is the final piece of Elko's offensive staff, joining Trooper Taylor (Associate head coach/running backs), Collin Klein (Offensive Coordinator/quarterbacks), Patrick Dougherty (Special Teams Coordinator/tight ends), and Adam Cushing (Run Game Coordinator/offensive line). He'll replace Dameyune Craig, a longtime disciple under Fisher.

Wiggins will have a chance to build relationships with up-and-comers like four-star recruit Izaiah Williams and four-star recruit Ernest Campbell. Veterans such as Noah Thomas, Moose Muhammad III and Jahdae Walker are all expected to return.

A&M also added Old Dominion's Javon Harvey, Kansas State's Wesley Watson, and Louisana Tech's Cyrus Jones via the transfer portal last month.

The Aggies, who finished 7-6 following their loss against No. 20 Oklahoma State in the TaxAct Texas Bowl, open the 2024 season at Kyle Field against Notre Dame.
