Alabama football’s defensive coordinator Kane Wommack has been tasked with going up against Ty Simpson and the Crimson Tide offense throughout the spring and in fall camp.
The former five-star has done enough in those battles to win Alabama’s starting quarterback job. Wommack has observed Simpson closely while competing against him, and he feels the signal caller can do what is needed to put the Tide in position to win in 2025.
“I think as a defensive coordinator, your job is to kind of be an expert right on offenses and what we’re doing, and how they’re attacking us,” Wommack said. “Ty just does such a great job of his command of the offense right now. He understands what Ryan (Grubb) and what Nick (Sheridan) are trying to get done out of the quarterback position, and what we’re trying to do offensively. He gets us into the right calls, he keeps us out of bad calls for the most part, and then does a really nice job of just taking care of the football. The dude makes plays. So, I mean, you know, take care of the football, make good decisions, make plays when it matters. That, to me, is the element of the quarterback. But when I watch him go through progressions, I mean, he has a great feel for, boom, boom, boom, and he stays on schedule.”
Simpson was named Alabama’s starting quarterback earlier this week. He reacted to the news while talking to media members on Tuesday.
“It’s something I’ve dreamed about since I came here,” Simpson told reporters. “But I’m not gonna sit here and say it’s nothing that I didn’t expect. I feel like I worked my tail off for it, and I’m just excited for the opportunity to go out there with my guys and compete every day.”
Alabama will now get to focus on starting the season strong with its quarterback competition behind it.More must-reads:
