As the excitement builds for the upcoming 2026 college football campaign, the Alabama Crimson Tide recently wrapped up its traditional A-Day spring showcase on Saturday. Head coach Kalen DeBoer, now entering his third year at the helm, remains determined to guide the program back to glory by securing its 18th national championship and the first since the 2020 season.
Even as preparations for the next season intensify, DeBoer and his recruiting staff have stayed active on the trail, steadily assembling talent for the 2027 recruiting cycle.
Currently, the group sits eighth among SEC programs and 23rd nationally, bolstered by four verbal commitments so far.
In an effort to strengthen the defensive front with elite prospects, Alabama has shown significant interest in standout EDGE rusher Anthony Sweeney. The Baltimore, Maryland product measures 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, earning five-star status as the No. 3 EDGE prospect and the No. 20 overall player in the country according to Rivals Industry Rankings.
During his junior year at Our Lady of Good Counsel, Sweeney delivered an impressive performance across 11 games, accumulating 34 tackles, five tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. His on-field production has drawn attention from major programs across the nation.
Sweeney had demonstrated notable enthusiasm for the Crimson Tide, making two unofficial visits to Tuscaloosa. When he revealed his top 12 schools, Alabama was included alongside Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Oregon, Auburn, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, LSU, Miami, Maryland, and Texas Tech.
Despite the strong push from DeBoer’s team to secure his pledge, the recruitment ultimately did not end in Alabama’s favor. On Monday, Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett reported that Sweeney has committed to the Red Raiders.
The news represents a setback for the Crimson Tide after investing considerable effort into building a connection with the talented pass rusher. Had he joined the class, Sweeney would have become the second defensive addition for the 2027 cycle, joining defensive lineman AJ Pauley.
Looking ahead, Alabama continues to extend offers to several other promising EDGE prospects in hopes of bolstering its defensive line depth. Among those targets are four-star recruits Chris Whitehead, Abraham Sesay, and JaBarrius Garror.
The Rivals recruiting prediction machine currently favors Alabama with the highest likelihood of landing Garror, projecting a 46.6 percent chance for his commitment to the Crimson Tide.
While missing out on Sweeney stings in the short term, the program’s ongoing pursuit of top defensive talent underscores DeBoer’s commitment to maintaining Alabama’s reputation as a premier destination for elite athletes. The staff will now shift focus toward closing strong on remaining targets to elevate the 2027 class standings even further.
With the 2026 season on the horizon and recruiting battles continuing year-round, the Crimson Tide aims to blend immediate on-field success with long-term roster building under DeBoer’s leadership.
Fans will be watching closely to see how the program rebounds in the weeks and months ahead on the trail.
