Alabama football’s freshman quarterback, Keelon Russell has been tagged as the future of the Crimson Tide.

Russell signed with Alabama as a five-star quarterback prospect out of Duncanville High School in Texas.

The Alabama coaching staff is letting a three-way quarterback competition continue to push on with Russell competing with Austin Mack and Ty Simpson for the starting quarterback role.

Ryan Grubb, the Tide’s offensive coordinator, revealed Russell had shown the ability to process information in team meetings and display the information on the field while talking with Ryan Fowler on Tide 100.9.

“He can drive the ball to all the corners of the field,” Grubb said. “He’s got a great tight release. The ball can push through wind and all that. He’s got a high spin rate, super efficient with his upper half. Like, he can get the ball out of his hand fast and make quick decisions.”

It remains no secret Russell is a true freshman, just a few months removed from high school football. This is among the reasons why Grubb feels there is still a ‘ton’ of things Russell needs to continue to work on.

“We’re still working on engaging his lower half to generate a little bit more power,” Grubb said, “He’s still got tons to work on, just like all these guys do, but really excited. I think sky’s the limit for him.”

Russell looks to continue to take step forward as a quarterback at UA.
