It's become far too common for coaches, scouts, and players to pull the "anonymous" card when they want to say something extremely negative to the media. Unfortunately various media outlets tend to run wild with those anonymous quotes every offseason.
Lane Kiffin has been subject to a few of those comments in the past, but one stood out here recently as particularly ignorant and wrong. And if Kiffin has another successful season with Ole Miss this year it's going to look incredibly foolish (alongside much of any other negative detractors).
An anonymous college football coach called out Lane Kiffin in the Athlon Sports College Football Magazine here recently in multiple ways. First and most predictably bashing his Transfer Portal habits. Then most ignorantly attacking his status as a coach, pointing to one negative game as the evidence.
"The first program in the [SEC] that went all-in on portal players to take them to a playoff bid went bust. Now what?...This is still an inconsistent program. The loss at Florida last year is an example of why Lane Kiffin isn't considered an elite coach."
Anonymous Coach Comments on Ole Miss in Athlon Sports CFB Magazine

Just embarrassing. Two quotes in a row, just wrong. And the cowardice to hide behind an anonymous quote? Just shameful.
Lane Kiffin and his staff have posted four top five Transfer Portal classes in a row, bringing in a ton of depth to maintain a competitive roster in the SEC. Yes, that's atypical for most SEC programs, but to call that approach a bust is definitely untrue (and we'll get to that shortly). Then to point to a Florida game that came down to a final drive in the fourth quarter in the swamp as a defining factor as to why Kiffin shouldn't be considered an elite coach? Laughable.
Calling Ole Miss an "inconsistent program" at this point requires a special kind of ignorance. The Rebels have won 39 games in the last four seasons, ranking at some point inside the AP Top 10 in each respective year.
The team has gone from just sending two players to the NFL Draft back in 2021 (following Kiffin's first season) to seeing eight of their players selected this spring and 21 in the last four years combined. The trajectory of the program is objectively soaring upwards in consistent fashion.
Lane Kiffin and his staff did just fall short of making the College Football Playoff last season, but by most every meaningful metric were a top tier team. The pass rush was the best in the nation, posting the most sacks and pressures throughout the regular season. The offense was one of the most explosive in the nation, posting more plays of 30+ yards than any other team in the game. Attempting to pick apart last year's Ole Miss squad or Kiffin's development of the program is truly reaching for straws made of nothing.
Kiffin should definitely be considered among the elite coaches in the sport. With one or two more good seasons at Ole Miss Kiffin will likely move into the top ten winningest active coaches. He already has 106 total career wins as a head coach. On top of that impressive win total, he's had just one losing season in his entire history of being a head college football coach (2018 at FAU).
Every single coach ranked ahead of Kiffin right now on the "most active wins" list is older than he is by multiple years. And nearly every single one of those coaches have multiple losing seasons on their head coaching ledger.
Yes, what happens in the post Jaxson Dart era will certainly define what many people think of Lane Kiffin. However, if he immediately finds a way to win with new young quarterback Austin Simmons, keeping Ole Miss near the top of the sport yet again, any anonymous quotes taking stabs at him will look incredibly foolish here soon. People need to learn to simply shut their mouths and enjoy the good taking place right in front of them.
