Kansas QB Jalon Daniels' announcement sets team up for big 2024

As Kansas prepares for the biggest game against in-state rival Kansas State in years, the program scored a huge win for 2024 when quarterback Jalon Daniels announced he's returning to Lawrence next season.

Daniels alluded to his 2023 season cut short by injury in a video posted to social media, saying, "This season didn't go as planned. But life comes at you fast, and sometimes your story is out of your control. But I guess that just means I have unfinished business...I'm not done yet."

Daniels, the Big 12 media's preseason Offensive Player of the Year, has only played in three games this season due to a back injury. But he showed why he was predicted to be the conference's best offensive player during that limited action, completing 74.7 percent of his attempts for 705 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.

In 2022, he appeared in nine games and was 152-of-230 (66.1 percent) for 2,014 yards, 18 touchdowns and four interceptions with 77 carries for 425 yards and seven rushing touchdowns.

On Saturday, College Football Playoff No. 25 Kansas (7-3) hosts No. 21 Kansas State (7-3), the first meeting in which both teams are ranked since 1995.

The Big 12 will undergo significant change before the 2024 season kicks off. Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah will join the conference next season as Texas and Oklahoma depart. The transfer portal can change any team's or conference's outlook in a heartbeat, so spending too much time projecting what next season will look like is fruitless at this point.

However, with Daniels, the Jayhawks are positioned as well as any team to win the conference in 2024.
