Bill Belichick will be getting a new athletic director at North Carolina next summer, the school announced Tuesday.

In a statement, North Carolina revealed that athletic director Bubba Cunningham will step down next summer and be replaced by Steve Newmark. Newmark is currently president of NASCAR’s Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing, and will be tasked with further modernizing the Tar Heels athletic department.

Newmark said he hopes to “continue to elevate UNC’s status as a premier brand in college sports with top-tier programs across the board.”

Presumably, the change will not necessarily mean anything for Belichick. He signed a five-year contract with the Tar Heels, though only the first three are guaranteed. He can also leave his position as football coach for a very low sum, all things considered.

If anything, a change in leadership might benefit Belichick. There were some reports that Cunningham was not even completely sold on hiring him.

The statement indicates that the football program will continue to receive plenty of attention from the new athletics director. Belichick will presumably get whatever he needs as long as he is at the school.
