The Florida Gators have one of the best young quarterbacks in the country in sophomore DJ Lagway. There have been a lot of questions about what things will look like with him as the unquestioned starting quarterback this season, especially with the injury he was dealing with in the offseason.
Head coach Billy Napier to the stage at SEC media day and cleared the air about how Lagway's summer workload as he recovers from the injury he was dealing with this offseason.
"We throw the quarterback three times a week, he's continued to do that. He actually had a good session this morning before we came here. So, we feel confident in terms of him being ready to go."
The health of Lagway has been a huge concern throughout the course of the offseason, especially with him not throwing at all during the entirety of spring practice. The initial belief was that Lagway was dealing with a shoulder injury, but SEC analyst and former Gators receiver Chris Doering believes it was a hernia that impacted his offseason and not a shoulder injury.
"Holding him out during the spring was just precautionary. A lot of people talking about the shoulder, (but) the reports that I heard that it was some sort of hernia type issue that made it back to his high school days that they were aware of, that they were trying to rest and not have too much strain on the shoulder by having him throw when his midsection wasn't right."
With Lagway having taken that time off this offseason to rest, being able to throw consistently after not doing so during spring practice is important on many levels, including developing chemistry with his receivers.
Plus, with Lagway fully healthy, it's going to be an important factor since the Gators have the most difficult schedule in the nation this year.
