You’ll have to return to 2015 to find the last time a running back won the Heisman Trophy, with Alabama’s Derrick Henry receiving the honor. Dating back to 2000, only four non-quarterbacks have won the trophy. However, following Boise State’s win over Georgia Southern, in which Jeanty rushed for 267 yards and 6 touchdowns, the third-year running back has become the favorite to win the 2024 Heisman trophy. In fact, at this point in the season, I think it’s safe to say that Ashton Jeanty is the best player in the country.
Through five games this season, Ashton Jeanty has 1,031 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. More impressively, he also possesses a 10.9 rushing yards per attempt. Further, he has two games with over 250 rushing yards each.
In my opinion, Barry Sanders is the best to play college football. The 1988 season, his last at Oklahoma State, is considered the best performance ever. That season, he finished with 2,628 rushing yards and 37 touchdowns. That season was capped off as Sanders received 559 first-place votes.
There’s still plenty of football left in the season, but Ashton Jeanty has an opportunity to break Sanders’ single-season record. In fact, according to Sportico, Jeanty is currently on pace to beat the record. If he can pull off the feat, Ashton Jeanty has to be one of the best players in the country. Furthermore, he’s also on pace to become one of the best ever.
If Ashton Jeanty declares for the 2025 NFL Draft, he’s likely to be a first or second-round pick. Additionally, he should wow scouts with a sub-4.50 40 time at the NFL Scouting Combine. He’s an explosive runner that shines when he’s able to break the ball outside. He’s a creative playmaker who does extremely well when utilizing his lateral agility and change of direction abilities.
Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty is the most electric college runner since Barry Sanders at Oklahoma State.

The Boise State Broncos have seven games remaining on their schedule, not including the Mountain West Conference Championship or a potential bowl game. We’ll see Ashton Jeanty back on the field this Saturday as they travel to take on the University of Hawaii.
