Breaking Down How UVA Football Replaces Malachi Fields
Amber Searls-Imagn Images

Malachi Fields heads to South Bend, Indiana, after recording 808 yards and five touchdowns his senior season in Charlottesville. Using his 6'4" frame, Fields was a surefire target for Anthony Colandrea and Tony Muskett over the last two seasons, and his presence on the field will be missed in 2025. With Fields set to suit up for Notre Dame in 2025, Virginia is tasked with replacing Fields this fall to provide new quarterback Chandler Morris with a wide receiver group that will allow him to lead Virginia to bowl eligibility.

In the words of Billy Beane from Moneyball, "What we might be able to do is re-create him. Re-create him in the aggregate."

Starting with the returning cast, Trell Harris is set to return after missing most of the season due to an injury, allowing him to redshirt the year and retain eligibility. The former Kent State transfer, in his four games in 2024, recorded 15 catches for 221 yards and two touchdowns. Harris recorded the first touchdown of the season for the Cavaliers with a 35-yard strike from Colandrea, quickly establishing himself as a deep threat to the Hoos.

Against Wake Forest, Harris built on his week one performance, posting seven catches for 91 yards and a key 24-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter that helped the Hoos comeback from a 13-point deficit on the road. Although we did not see Harris recognize his full potential in 2024, this fall allows Harris to serve as Chandler Morris's reliable pass-catcher with deep-threat ability, similar to Fields.

Kameron Courtney also returns after an impressive freshman season where he recorded 12 catches for 114 yards, earning him UVa's Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Courtney has been praised as having tremendous upside, utilizing his shiftiness to break tackles and make guys miss in the open field. Expect Courtney to move into an even more significant role in 2025 and keep an eye on his development during spring football.

Other prominent returners are Suderian Harrison, a shifty slot receiver, and Andre Greene Jr., who is similar to Fields in size, standing at 6 '2 and known for his contested catch ability. Greene Jr. made a clutch catch on a two-point conversion in the win over Boston College back in October.

Moving to the transfers, the Cavaliers picked up two wide receivers in the portal, Jahmal Edrine from Purdue and Cam Ross from JMU. Starting with the former, Edrine committed to the Hoos in December after posting 23 catches for 365 receiving yards and two touchdowns in 2024. Standing at 6'3", Edrine is a big-play wide receiver who can provide sparks in a Chandler Morris-led offense.

As for Cam Ross, he committed to Virginia on January 13th and brings a ton of experience after playing last season at JMU after transferring from UConn. Over his collegiate career, he has amassed 1,799 receiving yards and is known for his speed. Ross also brings experience as a return specialist, as he recorded a kick return touchdown last season with the Dukes. Expect Ross to rotate in as a slot receiver while also playing a role on Virginia's special teams.

So, with all of the potential candidates laid out, my pick for the starting wide receiver core is Jahmal Edrine at the X, Trell Harris at the Y, and Kameron Courtney at slot receiver for 2025. But look for Ross and Harrison to contribute significantly as well.

#1 Texas Longhorns Most Important Player: QB Arch Manning Why: Manning steps into the starting role after backing up Quinn Ewers. His ability to lead a talented roster with a rebuilt offensive line against a tough schedule, including a Week 1 clash with Ohio State, will define Texas’ national title hopes. His dual-threat potential (939 passing yards, 9 TDs, 4 rushing TDs in 2024) is critical. #2 Ohio State Buckeyes Most Important Player: WR Jeremiah Smith Why: Smith, a dynamic freshman in 2024 (15 TD catches, 17.3 yards per reception), is the centerpiece of Ohio State’s offense with a new QB (Julian Sayin) and new coordinators. His ability to stretch defenses will be vital for a repeat title run. #3 Penn State Nittany Lions Most Important Player: QB Drew Allar Why: Allar’s development as a passer is key for Penn State to overcome their Ohio State hurdle. With 2024’s top receivers gone, his ability to elevate a new receiving corps will determine if the Nittany Lions can compete for a Big Ten title. #4 Georgia Bulldogs Most Important Player: QB Gunnar Stockton Why: With Carson Beck transferring, Stockton takes over a Georgia team with 13 NFL Draft losses. His ability to manage a talented but retooled roster against a tough SEC schedule will dictate Georgia’s success. #5 Clemson Tigers Most Important Player: QB Cade Klubnik Why: Klubnik’s breakout 2024 season (3,600+ yards, 36 TDs) makes him the engine of Clemson’s ACC title defense. His consistency against top teams like South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers will be crucial. #6 LSU Tigers Most Important Player: QB Garrett Nussmeier Why: Nussmeier’s 2024 stats rivaled Jayden Daniels’ pre-Heisman year. With a strong receiving corps and a bolstered line, his growth could push LSU toward an SEC title, especially in night games at Tiger Stadium. #7 Oregon Ducks Most Important Player: QB Dante Moore Why: Moore, a transfer, replaces Dillon Gabriel and must maintain Oregon’s high-powered offense after a 13-0 2024 season. His adjustment to a new system and ability to lead against Ohio State in the playoffs will be pivotal. #8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Most Important Player: RB Jeremiyah Love Why: Love’s breakout 2024 season makes him the focal point of Notre Dame’s offense, especially with a QB battle (Carr vs. Minchey). His leadership and playmaking will be critical for Alabama to rebound under Kalen DeBoer. #10 Miami Hurricanes Most Important Player: QB Carson Beck Why: Beck, a transfer from Georgia, brings elite experience to Miami’s high-powered offense. His ability to gel with a reloaded roster will determine if the Hurricanes can challenge Clemson in the ACC. #11 Illinois Fighting Illini Most Important Player: QB Luke Altmyer Why: Altmyer’s return gives Illinois continuity after a 10-win 2024. His leadership against a tough Big Ten schedule (USC, Ohio State) will decide if the Illini can sustain their sleeper status. #12 Arizona State Sun Devils Most Important Player: QB Sam Leavitt Why: Leavitt’s return after a Big 12 title run is critical without star RB Cam Skattebo. His connection with WR Jordyn Tyson will drive ASU’s offense against a challenging road schedule. #13 Florida Gators Most Important Player: QB DJ Lagway Why: Lagway’s emergence in 2024 gives Florida a dynamic QB. His development with receivers like J. His growth as a passer and leader will be crucial for South Carolina to navigate a brutal schedule and contend for a CFP spot. #15: BYU Cougars Most Important Player: WR Chase Roberts Why: With top receivers gone, Roberts is the primary target for BYU’s passing game. His ability to create mismatches will be vital for the Cougars to stay in the Big 12 race. #16 Michigan Wolverines Most Important Player: QB Bryce Underwood Why: The five-star freshman is Michigan’s future, and his early impact could elevate a retooling offense. Generating a pass rush will complement his impact. #23 Iowa Hawkeyes Most Important Player: QB Brendan Sullivan Why: Sullivan, a transfer, must improve Iowa’s passing game, which has been a weak point. His performance will determine if the Hawkeyes can exceed their 8-5 2024 record. #24 Texas Tech Red Raiders Most Important Player: QB Behren Morton Why: Morton’s recovery from shoulder surgery and ability to lead a revamped defense with transfer additions will be crucial for Texas Tech to climb the Big 12 standings. #25 Auburn Tigers Most Important Player: QB Jackson Arnold Why: Arnold, an Oklahoma transfer, must stabilize Auburn’s offense under Hugh Freeze. Steelers reporter shares big claim about how Aaron Rodgers has looked in training camp

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers spent the bulk of the spring as an unsigned free agent and, thus, only began officially practicing with Pittsburgh Steelers teammates during the team's three-day mandatory minicamp in June. During a Monday appearance on Pittsburgh radio station 102.5 WDVE, Steelers reporter Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette addressed how Rodgers looked during his first few training camp practices with the club. "His release is just astonishing to watch," Dulac said about Rodgers, as shared by Ross McCorkle of Steelers Depot. "Everybody knows about it, and when you see it in person, you see it every day in practice, you just marvel at it. To me, he's the greatest thrower of the football I have ever seen, even at 41 (years old). That flick of that wrist and that ball comes out, it's moving and it is something to see." Rodgers was with the New York Jets when he suffered a torn Achilles four offensive snaps into the 2023 regular-season opener. He was then slowed by a nagging hip issue, injuries to both his knees, a low ankle sprain and a serious hamstring problem as the 2024 Jets went 5-12. According to Pro Football Reference, Rodgers finished last season ranked 28th in the NFL among qualified players with a 48.0 adjusted QBR and 26th with a 43.9 percent passing success rate. That said, he was also eighth with 3,897 passing yards and tied for seventh with 28 passing touchdowns. Rodgers and Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson endured some struggles during training camp sessions last summer before the two allegedly "never saw eye-to-eye" during the season. It sounds like Pittsburgh fans should be encouraged by how Rodgers performed in recent practices. "That guy can get rid of the ball as quick as anybody," Dulac added. "He made three throws in seven-on-seven (drills) the other day that the cumulative total I bet couldn't have exceeded 2.1 seconds. And two of those were for touchdowns." Rodgers wants to finish his career "the right way" and help the Steelers notch at least their first playoff win since January 2017. As of Monday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had Pittsburgh at -150 betting odds to miss the playoffs for the upcoming season.

Titans officially give up on this former first-round pick

The Tennessee Titans have officially given up on one of their former first-round draft picks. Wide receiver Treylon Burks has been waived by the Titans, the team announced on Monday. The decision to cut Burks comes two days after the 25-year-old suffered a broken collarbone during training camp practice. Burks injured himself while making a fantastic one-handed catch on a deep ball from rookie quarterback Cam Ward. Early reports suggest Burks will be out for several weeks and miss the start of the 2025 season. The Titans drafted Burks with the No. 18 overall pick in 2022. They acquired the selection when they traded A.J. Brown to the Philadelphia Eagles, and they had hoped the former Arkansas star would eventually develop into their top wide receiver. Burks, a three-time All-SEC selection, battled injuries throughout his first three NFL seasons. He played in just five games last year and finished with four catches. Ward said last week that he believed Burks was going to be one of Tennessee’s “best targets” this season, so the timing of the injury was unfortunate.

Phillies star confronted MLB commissioner in team clubhouse

Throughout the season, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred visits all 30 team clubhouses in an attempt to strengthen his relationship with the players. But when Manfred visited the Philadelphia Phillies last week, he did anything but strengthen his relations, at least not with Phillies star Bryce Harper. As reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan, Harper wasn't a fan of a conversation that seemed to be heading toward the possibility of implementing a salary cap in the game. Harper stood nose to nose with Manfred, telling him, "If you want to speak about that, you can get the [expletive] out of our clubhouse." Passan's report says that Manfred reportedly responded that he was "not going to get the [expletive] out of here." Manfred's main source of argument comes from his view that it's an important issue to discuss and has a direct impact on the game of baseball. Nick Castellanos, who's been known to have a fiery side of personality himself, helped to mediate the situation by saying, "I have more questions" to Manfred. Because the meeting continued, things settled down, and eventually, Manfred and Harper shook hands. Though Harper did not answer phone calls from Manfred the next day. "It was pretty intense, definitely passionate. Both of 'em. The commissioner giving it back to Bryce and Bryce giving it back to the commissioner. That's Harp. He's been doing this since he was 15-years-old," Castellanos told ESPN. Both Harper and Manfred declined to comment to ESPN on the matter. Manfred is certainly in a difficult spot with players themselves against a salary cap, as well as the MLB Players Association, which is adamantly against it. But some team owners are for it, most notably Baltimore Orioles owner David Rubenstein, who purchased the club in August 2024. It's certainly worth noting that the 1994 players' strike was a result of the league's effort to move to a salary-cap system. That is the worst-case scenario for MLB. And it seems to stress out Manfred. "Rob seems to be in a pretty desperate place on how important it is to get this salary cap," Castellanos added in his comments to ESPN, "because he's floating the word lockout two years in advance of our collective bargaining agreement [expiration]. That's nothing to throw around. That's the same thing as me in a marriage saying, 'I think divorce is a possibility. It's probably going to happen.' You don't just say those things." It's also important to note that Harper is a client of baseball super agent Scott Boras, and Castellanos is a former Boras client who now represents himself. Boras is known for bargaining for a ton of money for his clients, so that may provide one explanation of many for why Harper would be so against the discussion. It seems the only thing all parties can agree on is that no one wants a work stoppage in Major League Baseball. But that might just be where the agreements end.
