Brent Venables gets very blunt and real after the win over Tennessee regarding a play that shouldn't have even been called

The Oklahoma Sooners won a road game against a ranked opponent for the first time since 2019, which doesn't come easy in the SEC. Not only that, but they did it in one of the most hostile environments in the entire country, and yet, the game could have slipped away from them with one very dumb decision by John Mateer.

Late in the game, on a first down where the Sooners were trying to let as much time as possible run out on the clock, Mateer threw the ball on an RPO play, or a Run Pass Option play. This gives Mateer the freedom to hit a receiver on a quick route, hand the ball off, or even tuck it and run. He did the last thing he should have done and threw an interception. Anyone who knows anything about football was probably screaming at their TV as to why he didn't hand the ball off. But that's not entirely his fault.

"We were very, very fortunate; the last one there could have been catastrophic. We have to be smarter there from a coaching staff," head coach Brent Venables told reporters after the win. "There should be no option whatsoever. Just hand the ball off, every time."

Venables puts part of the blame for Mateer's interception on coaching

Venables put some of the blame on the coaching staff there, as he should, because why is that even being called? You don't want to put your QB in a position like that. As Venables said, that should be a handoff every single time. And if it's not a handoff, it should be a play where Mateer keeps it and runs himself.

Why wouldn't you hand the ball off there when RB Xavier Robinson looked unstoppable up until the point, as he finished with 115 rushing yards on 16 carries, and a touchdown (could have been two had he not kneeled at the one-yard line). And if they wanted to go the Mateer run game side of things, that would have been better as well.

Mateer ran the ball 16 times for 80 yards, one of his best rushing games of the year. The run game was very effective in this one, as it appears the Sooners have found something there. So, why in that situation do you even give the QB the ball to throw?

It's something that offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and Mateer will both learn from. Now, it's a bye week for the Sooners before they play the Alabama Crimson Tide next, before finishing their season against the Missouri Tigers and then the LSU Tigers.
