Brian Kelly comments on elevating Michael Van Buren if Garrett Nussmeier's injury status changes

The LSU Tigers are trending toward playing all of their key offensive stars against South Carolina this week, which should help the struggling unit get back on track. At the crux of concerns has been quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. The senior has been nursing a strained oblique that has clearly limited his throwing ability and effectiveness.

While fans have been yearning for LSU head coach Brian Kelly to make a move to backup Michael Van Buren so Nussmeier can rest, Kelly has been resistant. Last week, he did offer some promising news that Van Buren took first team reps with Nussmeier resting, and he offered yet another update this week.

Kelly is willing to put Van Buren in if he needs be, and that's solely because the young passer has earned it. Here's what he said this week and last about Van Buren.

Brian Kelly says Michael Van Buren is ready for LSU QB role

Kelly said, "He's beginning to command the offense the way I would like a starter to command it, not a backup." "I want to him to go in there with confidence and communication. I thought he did a very good job last week."

Speaking of last week, Kelly had more to add at the time.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for him. We’re gonna give Garrett some time to rest here this week, make sure he’s fully at 100%,” Kelly said. “Michael got all the first-team reps in articulation; he did a great job. He’s still learning, but as we said, we feel confident in his ability.”

Van Buren hasn’t seen much playing time for LSU this season, but he’s made the most of his opportunities. His most notable appearance came in Week 4 during LSU’s dominant 56-10 victory over Southeastern Louisiana, where he took over in the fourth quarter.

In that outing, Van Buren was sharp, completing 10 of 12 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown, all without committing a turnover. He joined LSU this past offseason after transferring from Mississippi State, where he played the 2024 season.

During his time with the Bulldogs, Van Buren completed 54.7% of his passes, throwing for 1,886 yards, 11 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. While head coach Brian Kelly has expressed confidence in Van Buren’s skill set, he doesn’t foresee the need for a full-time replacement for Garrett Nussmeier.

Speculation has swirled around Nussmeier’s health following a few lackluster performances. On Monday, Kelly addressed — and dismissed — rumors that the quarterback might require in-season surgery.

“That’s misinformation. Those are not based on any facts. They are quite silly, actually,” Kelly said. “I know you have to ask the question, so I am certainly not throwing you under the bus for asking it, because people want to know. But this is misinformation.

“Yes, early on, he had an ab strain, not a core injury in terms of a core injury (we have to) deal with. And, it’s been slow to heal. But, as I had mentioned, he is on the back side of that. He is getting rest this week. He will be the Garrett Nussmeier he needs to be as we get into the very difficult part of our schedule.”

Still, Van Buren remains ready should his number be called. After a bye this week, LSU returns to action on October 11 with a key SEC clash at home against South Carolina.
