Brian Kelly sidesteps addressing new Kyren Lacy evidence in latest statement

Brian Kelly continues to disappoint LSU Tigers fans on and off the field. Not only are the Tigers struggling to field a competitive offense despite a massive offseason NIL investment that brought Garrett Nussmeier back and lured several speedy receivers, but Kelly has repeatedly nuked goodwill opportunities. One day after new evidence emerged that Kyren Lacy was not responsible for a fatal accident, Kelly was asked about what it meant to his team.

The opportunity was there for Kelly to back his former star receiver, who died by apparent suicide only days before his grand jury date commenced. The charges for negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run, and reckless vehicle operation ended that moment.

Instead of using the moment to back Lacy and his family, Kelly issued what was closer to a non-answer.

Brian Kelly lets LSU and Kyren Lacy down with statement

Kelly said, "I thought that this was a process that takes time. When it occurred, I said 'Let's wait until all of the info comes out.' For us to make these universal statements early on, it doesn't serve anyone well. I don't have any facts here, I'm following it just as you guys are. Let's just be patient and make sure all the information gets out."

"He's loved by us. He was loved before, and is loved after. Our team loves Kyren. He was a great teammate, and he's going to be missed."

Fans responded with disappointment and ire in the wake of LSU's shocking loss to Ole Miss and repeated drama around Nussmeier's health.

Lacy’s attorney, Matthew Ory, has strongly challenged the official version of events. After reviewing surveillance and police body-camera footage, Ory publicly disputed the state’s account in a 44-minute interview with HTV’s Martin Folse. He argued that the video evidence places Lacy far from the scene at the moment of impact.

“At the time of impact, (Kyren Lacy) is 72.6 yards behind the vehicles… that is NOT how this story was ever painted,” Ory stated. He emphasized, “He was 72.6 yards [away] before they collide. He is almost a football field away back in his lane.”

It'd be nice to see Kelly show more love for one of his most productive players over his tenure with the program. At the very least, give more of a sign that he's happy to see this development and go beyond a cliche expression of care. We'll see what's next, but Kelly's decision-making might be putting him in more hot water.
