Bryce Underwood may not waste any time making his mark in Michigan.
The nation's top recruit gave head coach Sherrone Moore a massive win when flipping his commitment from LSU to Michigan late last year. Underwood is competing with East Carolina transfer Jake Garcia and Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene for a starting opportunity this summer.
The 17-year-old has undergone a significant body transformation since arriving in Ann Arbor. Underwood told The Wolverine's Clayton Sayfie that he's put on 15 pounds before his freshman year.
"I came in at 215. I weigh 230 right now," Underwood said. "I feel like it's made me more explosive. They help with our speed and everything like that, so I feel faster than I usually do."
Underwood dominated at Belleville High School, throwing 152 touchdowns over four years. He also displayed immense athleticism with an additional 600 rushing yards and six touchdowns last season.
Andrew Ivins called Underwood a "potential franchise signal caller with the ideal blend of size, arm talent and athleticism" in his scouting report for 247Sports. He likened the recruit to former national champion Vince Young, a dual-threat phenom at Texas.
A bigger, more explosive Underwood could be a dangerous proposition for opposing defenses.
The 6-foot-4 quarterback begins his collegiate career with immense expectations, and he may have a legitimate chance to capture the Week 1 starting job as a true freshman.
Last month, Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports called Underwood the "clear favorite" in Michigan's quarterback competition. The national college football writer said the teenage prospect "has more than lived up to the hype."
"He's been amazing," a source told Zenitz. "Awesome human being. Puts in a ton of work. Already commands a room, even with as young as he is. Has a goal to learn everybody's name in the building and gives the janitor the same respect that he gives the head coach. As a leader, he just gets it."
The Wolverines begin their 2025 season against New Mexico on Aug. 30.
