The Bryce Underwood Michigan debut came with all the buzz you’d expect. By the time the freshman jogged onto the field, more than 109,000 fans were leaning forward. Michigan doesn’t often hand its offense to a freshman quarterback. Saturday night, they did. And he looked ready.
Michigan beat New Mexico 42–10, in a routine early-season win. But the score wasn’t the story. It was Underwood, the now 18-year-old freshman, who completed 21 passes on 31 attempts for 251 yards and a touchdown. No Michigan true freshman has ever thrown for more in a debut. He connected with the star tight end Marlin Klein for a 21-yard score in the second quarter. He spread the ball around, moved the chains, and never looked rattled. Then he walked into the interview room and gave himself a C+.
The record mattered. But the calm mattered more. Underwood didn’t panic under pressure. He didn’t force throws into traffic. He took what was there, checked down when needed, and hit the open man. That’s not always what five-star freshmen do. The touchdown to Klein wasn’t spectacular. Just a read, a step, and a strike. But it was the kind of play Michigan needs to keep its offense on schedule in November.
Fans cheered like it was something bigger. And maybe it was.
Justice Haynes gave Michigan a balance. The transfer from Georgia ran wild with 159 yards and three touchdowns as he looked like a back built for the Big Ten. Every time he broke into the second level, the crowd roared. “It felt good to get in a rhythm,” Haynes said. “The offensive line opened up lanes, and Bryce kept us steady in the huddle.” – Maize n Brew
Haynes gave Underwood breathing room. With him pounding away, New Mexico had to respect the run, and the freshman quarterback never had to press. That’s the formula. Michigan doesn’t need Underwood throwing 40 times in September.
Michigan’s opener wasn’t flawless. A muffed punt. A fumble. Defensive penalties that kept drives alive. The offensive line opened holes for Haynes but leaked at times in pass protection. Against New Mexico, no problem. Against Oklahoma? That can’t happen at all.Head coach Sherrone Moore acknowledged as much. “Bryce did some really good things tonight,” he said. “But he knows there are areas he’s got to clean up.” – Maize n brew
That was the theme of the night. Progress. Promise. And plenty left to fix.
A Week 1 win over New Mexico usually disappears from memory by midseason. This one won’t, as New Mexico actually put up a good fight. The Bryce Underwood debut mattered because of what it represented. The Wolverines trusted a teenager with their offense. He rewarded them with efficiency and composure. He showed that the future isn’t a year away. It’s here.
The numbers will stand out. But the way he carried himself while leading his team won’t go unnoticed. He didn’t panic, and there was no showboating from Bryce as he was just calm, cool, and collected.
Think back to 2004. Chad Henne stepped in as a freshman and threw 25 touchdowns. In 2009, Tate Forcier flashed early but couldn’t sustain it. Denard Robinson didn’t start right away, but changed the sport when he did. J.J. McCarthy steadied the program and delivered playoff wins. Now it’s Underwood’s turn. His 251-yard debut already has him in the record book. Where he goes from here depends on how quickly he adjusts once the defenses get faster and the games matter more.
The opener was a good introduction. The next game will be a test. Michigan heads to Oklahoma, and that will be a different kind of night. The Sooners will blitz more, cover tighter, and punish mistakes. The offensive line will be stressed. The windows will be smaller.
That’s where we’ll learn more about Underwood. Can he keep his poise when he doesn’t have time? Can he process quickly enough when the defense disguises coverages? We’ll find out soon.
The Bryce Underwood Michigan debut set a record. It set expectations, too. Fans left the Big House talking about the future. Underwood left it thinking about his mistakes. That gap, excitement outside, higher standards inside, may be what makes him the quarterback Michigan has been waiting for.
And if this was just the starting point, the Wolverines have reason to believe the next era arrived a little early.
