East Carolina University has suspended three football players indefinitely following their arrests early Sunday morning.

According to WBTV in Charlotte, Brock Spalding, J.D. Lampley, and Preston Carr were arrested and charged with discharging a firearm within city limits. Additionally, Spalding faces a charge of resisting, delaying, and obstructing officers.

The incident occurred at a residence on Locust Drive, approximately a mile from ECU’s campus. Greenville police were dispatched after receiving reports of gunshots in the area.

While en route, officers reportedly heard gunfire in the area. Upon arrival, police encountered Lampley and Carr outside the home. The two allegedly admitted to firing a weapon and were subsequently arrested. Spalding initially refused to exit the residence but complied after a brief standoff, according to reports.

Lampley and Carr were both projected starters on ECU’s defensive line for the 2025 season. Lampley, a preseason All-American Athletic Conference selection, is a key piece of the Pirates' defense. Spalding has totaled 101 receiving yards over the last three seasons and was also named a preseason all-conference player by Phil Steele Magazine.

East Carolina acknowledged the incident in a statement and confirmed that all three players have been suspended indefinitely from team activities. Their availability for the 2025 season remains uncertain at this time.

This development could have major implications for ECU’s upcoming matchup against BYU on September 20.

This is also the Cougars first road game of the season, which might come against a weakened defensive front. The Pirates are widely considered the Cougars’ toughest non-conference opponent, adding further intrigue to the early-season showdown.
