Cal vs Virginia Tech Prediction: The Bears’ Long Journey Starts Here
© Eakin Howard-Imagn Images

Cal is one of the weirder teams this year in the ACC picture.

It beat Minnesota, got its doors blown off by San Diego State, and in conference play, it’s managed to get to 2-1 with a relatively easy schedule ahead - no Miami or Georgia Tech. However, this is the first of two very, very long 2,700-mile trips to ACC-land over the next month.

After this, Virginia comes to Berkeley, and then it’s off to Louisville, and then down the road to deal with Stanford before finishing with SMU.

On the flip side, Virginia Tech is just playing out the string. It still has a crazy shot to get bowling, but it needs to win four of its last five, and that includes dates at Florida State and Virginia, and home games against Louisville and Miami.

Realistically, this might be the last shot at a win this year for the Hokies.

Why Cal Will Win

Virginia Tech is playing hard, and it’s giving it the old college try, but the defense isn’t holding up.

The pass defense is struggling - Georgia Tech’s Haynes King played like he was throwing against air a few weeks ago in the 35-20 Hokie loss - and the run defense has been wildly hit-or-miss.

Cal is a self-destruct team. It doesn’t have a turnover problem, but when it starts giving the ball away, uh oh.

It turned it over four times in the loss to Duke, three times in the loss to San Diego State, and in the other four FBS games combined, it turned it over just once.

Virginia Tech has forced just five takeaways on the year, but …

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokie run defense has been oddly great at times.

It got destroyed by Georgia Tech a few weeks ago, Old Dominion’s great ground game went off, and Vanderbilt had a lot of fun, but that’s been about it. For the most part, the front has been holding up.

This isn’t the most physical of Cal teams. It relies on freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and the midrange passing game to keep things moving, but the ground attack doesn’t do much to move the chains.

Stop the run, hope JKS is off, and …

Cal vs Virginia Tech Prediction, Betting Lines

Freaky things happen in the ACC on Friday nights.

Virginia got the snowball rolling that ruined the Florida State season, Louisville shocked Miami, and Cal has this very, very long road trip to deal with.

Can Virginia Tech keep the chains moving? It won the two times it did a good job on third downs, but the Cal defense has been terrific this year on third downs.

But it’s Friday night in the ACC. Again, weird stuff happens …
