College Football Insider Comments on 'Unpredictable' Deion Sanders and Colorado

With Big 12 Media Days now in the rearview, all eyes in Boulder turn toward fall camp and the 2025 season for Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes.

This year will carry a distinctly different tone, as Coach Prime begins his second Big 12 campaign and one without the leadership and star power of his sons, quarterback Shedeur Sanders and safety Shilo Sanders, along with Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. Their departures mark a significant shift on the field and in the locker room.

As the season opener against Georgia Tech is now just six weeks away, Sanders is already facing a steep climb. He recently returned from a health setback at his estate in Texas, forcing him to play catch-up as fall camp begins.

Despite the uncertainty, oddsmakers have set Colorado’s win total at 6.5. While some believe that’s too low, On3’s Andy Staples thinks it's a fair projection given the unknowns surrounding this team.

“This year Deion went into the portal just about as much as everybody else, which tells me he likes the guys he's got,” Staples said during an appearance on Crain and Company. “I don't know if that should be alarming, or that means they might be even scarier.”

Unpredictability surrounds this team after many starters are now on NFL rosters. Sanders has kept quiet on key roster decisions, including who will replace Shedeur at quarterback. Julian Lewis, a highly touted true freshman, and Kaidon Salter, a transfer with dual-threat ability, both made appearances at Big 12 Media Days in Frisco, Texas.

Yet, Sanders has shown no signs of naming a starter soon. The fact that Lewis was invited at all speaks volumes, as true freshmen rarely represent their programs at media events. It goes to show the rest of the nation just how close the battle is between both signal callers.

With a primetime season opener on ESPN, the Buffaloes will have the nation’s attention right away. Whether they can meet or exceed expectations without their biggest stars remains to be seen. But Coach Prime has taught everyone to expect the unexpected in Boulder.
