Deion Sanders is trying to speak it into existence with his son Shedeur.
The Colorado head coach Deion made headlines on Monday by offering a very bold prediction about Shedeur, the Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback. While appearing on the “New Heights” podcast hosted by Jason and Travis Kelce, Deion said that he predicts Shedeur will be starting for the Browns at some point this season.
“You got to be ready when it’s time,” said Deion, per Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN. “But when it’s time, you’re going to know. And it’s coming up. I got a prediction. I ain’t telling nobody. I got a feeling when it’s going to go down. But it’s going to go down this year. … He’s going to get a shot [to start for the Browns].”
The 23-year-old Shedeur, who was a fifth-round pick by Cleveland this year (No. 144 overall), certainly has a lot of work to do to get to that point. Though Shedeur had a solid showing in the preseason, he still began the year as the Browns’ QB3 behind veteran Joe Flacco (the starter) and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel (the backup). Then a report emerged earlier this month claiming that Shedeur had been even further demoted to spectator duty for Cleveland.
But in Deion’s defense, the 1-2 Browns have a very dysfunctional passing game right now. Flacco has thrown for just 631 yards with two touchdowns to four interceptions through the first three games, and he has not been able to consistently get the ball to the team’s best pass-catchers like Jerry Jeudy and David Njoku.
With upcoming games in the next two weeks against Detroit and Minnesota, it won’t get much easier for Cleveland from here either. As a result, Deion, who actually has his own notable connection to the Browns, is predicting that Shedeur will get his shot under center before long this season.
