Deion Sanders Misses Colorado Camps Amid Health Concerns

According to a report from USA Today’s Brent Schrotenboer, the Colorado football program could be without its head coach for a while.

Buffaloes’ head coach Deion Sanders is not in Boulder this week as CU’s summer camp circuit ramps up, raising questions about his health and future availability.

Sanders, 57, is currently at his home in Canyon, Texas, and hasn’t appeared at any of the Buffaloes’ youth or high school camps—events he’s not only contractually obligated to support but also prominently advertised in. Last year, he was front and center. This time? No timeline on his return.

His son, Deion Jr., shared during a June 8 YouTube livestream that Coach Prime is “feeling well” but will update fans on his status at a later date.

“He’ll tell y’all soon enough what he going through, what he went through,” Deion Jr. said on the livestream.

“When we get back in Boulder, I don’t know,” Deion Jr. admitted. “I’m waiting until my dad leaves. Until then, I’m gonna sit here with him.”

That same day, Sanders was also scheduled to speak at a Florida health symposium but canceled due to a “last-minute scheduling change.” Magic Johnson filled in.

Sanders’ health history is no secret—serious circulation issues in his legs led to two toe amputations and ongoing complications. CU athletic trainer Lauren Askevold, who’s been by his side since the situation escalated in 2021, remains with him in Texas.

Though Sanders has stayed off the radar since April’s NFL Draft, he hinted on a recent podcast appearance with Asante Samuel that his current condition is “at a whole nother level,” and is reportedly down 14 pounds.

While Colorado presses forward with camps—including this week’s youth camp and a women’s clinic—its most visible figure remains hundreds of miles away.

With a pivotal second season in the Big 12 on the horizon, all eyes are on Coach Prime’s recovery and return.
