ESPN Analyst Reveals True Feelings on BYU's QB Room as Retzlaff exits

ESPN analyst Greg McElroy addressed Jake Retzlaff’s departure from BYU, urging fans not to panic. While at Big 12 Media Days in Frisco, Texas last week, the former Alabama QB explained his position with BYUtv and expressed confidence in the program’s leadership and structure.

“I’m not panicking at all… This is a [BYU] offense that is not going to be exclusively on the quarterback’s shoulders. It’s never been that way. I trust Kalani. I trust the system. I trust the identity and the culture,” McElroy said.

Retzlaff was a critical part of BYU’s 2024 offense, accounting for 66 percent of the team's production and tallying 26 total touchdowns. His withdrawal from the program leaves a major void and sets the stage for a heated three-way quarterback battle in fall camp. The competition features McCae Hillstead and Treyson Bourguet, who are both returning from last season, along with Stanford transfer Bear Bachmeier.

While none offer a plug-and-play solution, McElroy’s faith in head coach Kalani Sitake and the program’s offensive identity is strong enough for BYU to weather the transition.Offensively, BYU isn’t expected to rely solely on whoever wins the quarterback job. Running back LJ Martin enters his third season as the Cougars' top rusher and will be leaned on heavily to stabilize consistency on the ground.

Martin led BYU in rushing yards the past two years and remains the centerpiece of a rushing attack that could take a big leap in 2025. ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura even called Martin a sleeper pick, citing his breakout potential in a Big 12 conference where BYU has chosen continuity over portal additions.

While there will be growing pains, the Cougars appear committed to developing from within. And for McElroy, that’s a reason to trust the process in Provo.
