ESPN isn't waiting until the start of the 2025 college football season to rank every team in the SEC.
The SEC is almost always represented well every college football season. With that said, ESPN expects Texas to be the conference's No. 1 team this year. There's a ton of hype surrounding the Longhorns, especially since Arch Manning is under center. The former five-star recruit played well during Quinn Ewers' absence last season.
Unsurprisingly, ESPN also has Georgia near the top of its power rankings. The Bulldogs should be considered perennial contenders with Kirby Smart at the helm.
Here are the top five teams in the SEC, according to ESPN:
On the flip side, ESPN doesn't expect Mississippi State to have a ton of success this year.
ESPN's Mark Schlabach and Chris Low provided some commentary as to why they have Mississippi State ranked last in the SEC.
"It has been a whirlwind for second-year Mississippi State coach Jeff Lebby, who has had to completely overhaul the roster, 80% consisting of players in their first or second year in the program," they wrote. "Lebby is excited by what he has seen from quarterback Blake Shapen, who missed most of last season with a shoulder injury. The home schedule for the Bulldogs is one of the toughest in the country. Four playoff teams from a year ago (Arizona State, Tennessee, Texas and Georgia) visit Starkville."
Mississippi State went 2-10 last season with Lebby as the head coach. In theory, the program should improve its record this fall.
On Aug. 30, Mississippi State will kick off its 2025 season against Southern Miss. It'll then be tested against Arizona State on Sept. 6.
Things could get really ugly once conference play begins for Mississippi State. Four straight games against Tennessee, Texas A&M, Florida and Texas isn't exactly a recipe for success.
We'll see if ESPN's SEC power rankings age well.
