In a surprising turn of events for the Florida Gators football program, tight end Amir Jackson has decided to remain in Gainesville after initially signaling his intent to leave. The young player, who had announced plans to explore other options on December 15, now looks forward to contributing during his upcoming redshirt sophomore campaign.
Reports from recruiting expert Hayes Fawcett indicated over the weekend that Jackson is recommitting to the team. This development comes as a boost for the Gators amid an active offseason filled with roster changes.
During his time on the field this past season, Jackson participated in 11 contests as a redshirt freshman. He recorded three receptions totaling 29 yards, including a memorable score that marked his first collegiate touchdown.
Recruited as a highly regarded four-star prospect from the 2024 class, Jackson drew attention for his impressive physical gifts. He took a redshirt in his initial year on campus, limiting his early opportunities, but began to earn more snaps in the following season.
Jackson served primarily as the depth option at tight end, positioned behind veterans Hayden Hansen and Tony Livingston. His breakthrough moment arrived during a challenging matchup against Texas A&M on October 11, where he hauled in his initial career touchdown reception.
Expectations are rising for Jackson to step into a more prominent position. He will compete under the guidance of offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner and tight ends coach Evan McKissack.
The Gators anticipate Tony Livingston returning as a key contributor at the position, providing some continuity. However, beyond that duo, the depth chart features limited proven talent.
Younger options like redshirt freshmen Micah Jones and Cameron Kossmann are slated to be back, adding potential competition. Additionally, Florida welcomed four-star prospect Heze Kent as their lone tight end signee in the 2026 recruiting cycle.
Jackson had been among an initial group of 23 players expressing interest in transferring out of the program. His decision to stay makes him the first to reverse course, offering positive momentum as the staff works to stabilize the roster.
Other areas of focus include efforts to keep defensive lineman Michai Boireau, who has also indicated plans to enter the portal. Meanwhile, several players have already committed to returning, such as linebacker Myles Graham, linebacker Aaron Chiles, cornerback Dijon Johnson, receiver Vernell Brown III, defensive lineman Joseph Mbatchou, and defensive lineman Jeramiah McCloud. Reports also suggest the program is retaining center Jason Zandamela-Popa, linebacker Jaden Robinson, and edge rusher LJ McCray.
The official NCAA Transfer Portal window is scheduled to open on January 2 and remain active until January 16, setting the stage for further developments in college football’s offseason landscape.
