Former controversial Notre Dame assistant gets new opportunity, and the destination will bring back nightmares for Fighting Irish fans

The ending of the Chansi Stuckey tenure with Notre Dame wasn’t the cleanest. The former wide receiver coach had a promising start to his tenure, including his impact in the 2023 recruiting class that brought Jaden Greathouse, KK Smith, Rico Flores, and Braylon James. All seemed to be trending in a great direction.

Then the 2023 season happened. Not only did wide receiver production leave a lot to be desired, but there was reportedly some animosity within that room. Coach Stuckey was let go when the regular season was over, making way for Mike Brown to take over before the bowl game.

Since Stuckey was let go, there hadn’t been a ton of conversation around him. He took the 2024 season off without a team, but he found a new home on Tuesday. It was reported by John Brice of Football Scoop that Stuckey had been hired by Marshall University as the new wide receivers coach.

Stuckey will join new head coach Tony Gibson who accepted the job this offseason. Gibson had previously served as the defensive coordinator for the NC State program for the last six seasons. He served in a similar capacity with West Virginia from 2014-18 as well.

Before Stuckey was hired by head coach Marcus Freeman prior to the 2022 season, he had spent one year as the wide receivers coach at Baylor. His start in coaching began back home at Clemson under head coach Dabo Swinney. Stuckey was a tremendous player for the Tigers during his playing career, hauling in 141 receptions for 1,760 yards and seven touchdowns. He parlayed that success into a 4-year NFL career.

For Notre Dame fans, it’s going to be pretty ironic to see Coach Stuckey on the staff at Marshall. Of course that is a 2022 loss that still haunts the fanbase. It will be interesting to see if Stuckey can revitalize a once promising career as a position coach.
