Former Colorado Buffaloes running backs coach Gary "Flea" Harrell has landed another college football job only two hours north of Boulder.

On Tuesday, the Wyoming Cowboys announced Harrell as their new running backs coach, taking over for the Washington State-bound Donnell Kirkwood Jr. Harrell had worked under Colorado coach Deion Sanders for the past five seasons, including three at Jackson State, before parting ways earlier this offseason. "Coach Prime" announced Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk as the Buffs' new running backs coach in February.

Harrell will now work under Wyoming coach Jay Sawvel, who finished 3-9 last season in his first year leading the Cowboys.

"Coach Harrell really stood out during the interview process with his experience with the position and his overall experience as a coach which includes time as a head coach at his Alma Mater," Sawvel said in a press release. "He is well-respected with a great sense for the game offensively, and we are excited to have him here at the University of Wyoming and excited to get him in the room and out on the field with our team."

As Sawvel mentioned, Harrell was the head coach at Howard, which competes at the Football Championship Subdivision level, from 2011-16. The Bison went 20-36 in Harrell's five seasons at the helm.

Harrell then coached wide receivers at Florida Atlantic from 2017-18 and running backs at Alabama State in 2019 before joining "Coach Prime" at Jackson State in 2020.

"I'm very excited for this next step and excited to be amongst this staff," Harrell said. "I have heard great things about the atmosphere here at the University of Wyoming and excited for this opportunity to bring my energy and work with this great group of young men."

Harrell will soon return to Boulder as Wyoming is scheduled to challenge the Buffs at Folsom Field on Sept. 20. Colorado last faced Wyoming in 2009 and is 24-2-1 all-time against the Cowboys.

As a member of the Mountain West Conference, Wyoming is facing some uncertainties moving forward. Last fall, the Pac-12 Conference poached Utah State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Boise State from the Mountain West, leaving the Cowboys behind. The Mountain West since reloaded with a few lower-level schools, but Wyoming certainly didn't benefit from the latest round of conference realignment.

While Colorado largely relied on the right arm of quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the Buffs' rushing attack struggled during Harrell's two-year tenure. Colorado averaged under 70 rushing yards per game in each of the past two seasons.

Faulk takes over a running back room that includes Micah Welch, Dallan Hayden, Brandon Hood and longtime Buff Charlie Offerdahl. Isaiah Augustave is no longer on the Colorado football team, as reported by DNVR's Scott Procter on Wednesday.
