Former Tennessee All-SEC standout under Johnny Majors joining Vols coaching staff

It appears as though Josh Heupel is adding someone with experience and a history of making big plays on the field at Neyland Stadium to his coaching staff.

According to Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports/CBS Sports, former Tennessee standout Marion Hobby is joining Tennessee's staff.

Hobby was a standout defensive lineman for the Vols back in the late 1980s under Johnny Majors.  He earned All-SEC honors in 1989, serving as a starter on one of the Vols' most underrated teams.  Tennessee finished 11-1 in 1989 and #5 in the final polls after defeating Arkansas 31-27 in the Cotton Bowl.

Three months later, he was drafted in the third round of the 1990 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings.  He would have a three-year career with the New England Patriots, appearing in 42 games with 5 sacks.

He's since created an impressive coaching resume for himself.  His first coaching job was back in 1995 with Tennessee-Martin as their strength and conditioning coach.  He ended up with Tennessee for one season as an assistant strength and conditioning coach, and it was a good one for Vol fans -1998.

He would end up taking Ole Miss' defensive line coaching gig from 1999-2004 and slowly begin to carve out bigger roles.  He served as co-defensive coordinator from 2011-16 and has served as an NFL defensive line coach at various stops from 2017-24, including coaching in Super Bowl LVI with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hobby's extensive experience at the college and pro level, as well as his prior responsibilities handling coordinator duties, should help bring valuable insight to the Vols' defensive meetings and give DC Tim Banks a great resource to bounce ideas off of in 2025.
