The first full week of the 2025 college football season arrived on Saturday.
While plenty of teams efficiently handled lesser opponents, a few others have landed on people’s radars after their shocking performances.
The biggest upset, by far, occurred in Tallahassee, Fla.
Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos claimed No. 8 Alabama didn't "have Nick Saban to save them" in an interview with On3 (h/t Yahoo Sports) during the offseason. How did he back up the smack talk? Oh, just by totaling over 200 all-purpose yards and picking apart a talented defense in the Seminoles’ 31-17 victory over the Crimson Tide.
After a horrid 2-10 (1-7 ACC) season a year ago, head coach Mike Norvell has seemingly rallied his troops and revived the program. Aside from the opening possession, FSU looked comfortable and controlled the rest of the game.
Heading into the season, many people believed Clemson would reign supreme in the ACC yet again. As the legend himself, Lee Corso, would say, though, “not so fast, my friend.” The Seminoles seem ready to make another run at the conference crown.
Before Friday, head coach Hugh Freeze was sitting on a scorching hot seat. However, thanks to the Tigers’ 38-24 victory at Baylor, the chair has cooled down for the moment.
Quarterback Jackson Arnold carried the ball 16 times and racked up 137 yards as well as two scores. Performances like this were almost non-existent for Arnold at Oklahoma, but under the new system, he appears to have the offense clicking on all cylinders.

The Tigers' defense also played a significant role. They turned the Bears over on downs three times, including twice inside their own 15-yard line.
While it’s only the first weekend, Auburn already looks prepared to compete in the SEC this year, and their home matchups against Georgia and Alabama down the road became a whole lot more interesting.
USF began Week 1 in dominating fashion by knocking off No. 25 Boise State. Quarterback Byrum Brown muscled his way to two touchdowns on the ground, while the Bulls' defense forced three fumbles and held the Broncos to just seven points.
When it comes to the Group of Six’s bid for the College Football Playoff, South Florida is the favorite entering Week 2. However, head coach Alex Golesh must get his squad ready quickly, as road tests against Florida and Miami loom. Even if the Bulls manage to stay competitive in those two games, they can find themselves in the conversation come December.
Which team was the first to secure win number two in 2025? Was it Kansas? UNLV? Maybe Iowa State? Try Tarleton State, which upset FBS foe Army in a double-overtime thriller on Friday.

To most, this came as a surprise. But within the FCS, the Texans rank No. 8 as they return a heap of production and are favorites to win the United Athletic Conference.
The win over the Black Knights was a massive step toward competing with the likes of Montana State and vying for an FCS championship.
