This was so close to being one of the biggest games of the weekend.

It still matters, but had Georgia Tech not faceplanted against Pitt, it would’ve been 10-1 and all but in the College Football Playoff with a good performance against the Bulldogs.

But the Yellow Jackets lost 42-28, they’re on the outside looking in at the ACC Championship chase, and …

If they beat Georgia, that changes almost everything … maybe. The losses to NC State and Pitt might be too much to overcome, but take out the fourth-best team in college football - at least according to the College Football Playoff committee - and that matters.

The Bulldogs won’t get knocked out of the CFP at this point, but it’ll be a tense week if they don’t get out of this with a W, no matter how it looks.

Oh yeah, and it’s a big rivalry game that should be a blast.

Georgia Tech’s pass defense has fallen off a cliff.

It couldn’t stop Boston College’s Dylan Lonergan until it was almost too late, and Pitt’s Mason Heintschel went off in a fantastic first half in last week’s win. Duke’s Darian Mensah was fantastic, NC State’s CJ Bailey was razor sharp, and now it’s Gunner Stockton’s turn.

Georgia is getting better fast in a whole slew of ways, but it’s been the emergence of Stockton as one of the nation’s hottest passers that’s made a huge difference.

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

There but for the tough losses to NC State and Pitt goes the Heisman discussion around Haynes King.

King’s been banged up from the pounding he takes on a weekly basis, but he keeps on making plays and rallying the team time and again.

He’s one of the nation’s best running quarterbacks with 883 yards and 15 scores, and this is Round Three against Georgia.

Fantastic in last year’s 44-42 close-call loss, King threw for over 300 yards, ran for 110 yards and three scores, and …

The Georgia defense has taken things up several notches.

And yeah, it’s had to hear all about King way too much coming into this. It’s not like that makes it a given to stop 10, but the defense that’s cranked its game up several notches since the rough day against Ole Miss should keep him from taking off.

This isn’t the Georgia defense of last year, and this really isn’t the Georgia offense of 2024. The O is far more consistent, the D is playing better, and there’s no taking Georgia Tech lightly.
