The Alabama Crimson Tide have a QB battle on their hands for the first time in years.

Right now, there is a clear frontrunner and it's not freshman sensation Keelon Russell.

But that doesn't mean he isn't already turning heads for all the right reasons...

Keelon Russell Puts on 17 Pounds, Impresses Early in Spring

"I saw him [Keelon Russell] last summer, and I saw him in person for one game last fall. He's in pads and all that at time, too, said Kalen DeBoer on Monday. "He looks good right now. Strong. Moves around. He's just a good all-around athlete...

"...The weight program for him, for any new guy, is going to be critical. It's good to get that first phase under your belt. That's why being an early enrollee is so important. Obviously now and through the spring, the reason — there's multiple reasons, but one of the reasons why we go every other day and not back-to-back ever is just so we can get big days of lifting in, really, a minimum three times a week."

With a move to early enrollment, fewer players are becoming redshirt freshmen. Instead of waiting until June to get acclimated to college strength, conditioning, and nutrition programs, early enrollment allows players to get a six-month headstart, which is already paying dividends for Russell.

"He's up there. He certainly is," added DeBoer when asked if Keelon Russell is among the best freshman QBs he's seen. "He's got a long ways to go because I think that's the way he looks at it. He's excited about what this growth's going to be, even during this spring. But his ceiling and what he accomplished through what you can see on the high school film, he's a pretty elite quarterback coming in as a high school senior,  current freshman for us."

Ty Simpson is confident that he will win the starting job, and he should be. Three years of experience a familiarity with Kalen DeBoer's scheme and Alabama's weapons gives him a leg up, but don't count Russell out just yet.
