As Alabama looked to bounce back after what was the worst season since 2007, Kalen DeBoer's squad was on the wrong end of a major college football upset on Saturday.
With the No. 8 Crimson Tide making the trip to Tallahassee to take on the Florida State Seminoles, the expectation was that Alabama would walk away with a big win. Instead, the Crimson Tide lost 31-17 despite entering the game as 13.5-point favorites.
Tide fans were still seething following last year's 9-4 campaign, and the clamors to fire DeBoer have only grown louder despite it being his second year on the job. In fact, the calls for former head coach Nick Saban to come out of retirement have also dramatically increased.
Although Alabama has a full season ahead of them, and it's unlikely they'd fire a head coach after one full season, it seems fans are quite curious about what it would require if the program were to move on.
As reported by ESPN's Chris Low, there'd be a hefty buyout if the program were to move on.
"DeBoer's contract is 90 percent guaranteed if he were to be fired without cause, and there is no mitigation," wrote Low. "His buyout if he were to leave Alabama before his contract is up is $5 million in 2024, $4 million in 2025, $3 million in 2026 and nothing from 2027-31."
Being that he is in year two of his deal, his buyout would be an estimated $70 million, according to 247Sports.
With the loss, Alabama is now 4-5 in its last nine games against Power 4 teams.
On the bright side, if there was one they take on Louisiana Monroe next week, and should have a chance to fine-tune their issues on both sides of the ball.
