Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables thinks the Tennessee Vols received a gift from the officiating crew this past Saturday night in Knoxville.
While reviewing the game on Sooner Football, Venables pointed out that the Sooners should've been off the field on the Vols' first drive of the game after appearing to force a three-and-out from Tennessee.
A defensive pass interference call, however, extended the drive for Tennessee.
"I think they missed one there" - Brent Venables didn't agree with the defensive pass interference call against Oklahoma early in the first quarter
While discussing the lopsided first half stats in the win over Tennessee (the Vols, despite trailing at halftime, put up better numbers than OU in the first half), Venables pointed out that he didn't exactly agree with the defensive pass interference call that kept UT's first drive alive.
"The first drive, we go 1-2-3, and we got the guy blanketed," said Venables. "He runs right into us. The tight end (Miles Kitselman) does. He puts his head down, just what he did all season on tape, and runs right into us. And I think they missed one there. We should be off the field. Well, they turn right around on the next play, and they go right down [and hit] a big play. Those things don't happen if they just get it right."
That's certainly a call that we've seen officials let go at times (I'm guessing from the official's angle it looked like the OU defender pulled Kitselman's arm).
Tennessee took advantage of the penalty by finishing the drive with a five yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joey Aguilar to wide receiver Braylon Staley.
By the way, the Sooners received a gift on the Vols' next possession as Oklahoma defensive end R Mason Thomas got away with lining up offsides on the scoop and score that tied the game at seven.
