With the No. 5 seed Texas Longhorns trailing by a touchdown against the No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes in the fourth quarter, they found themselves within a yard of tying it up.
Instead, disaster ensued. Running back Jerrick Gibson was unable to power it in, which led to one of the more questionable play calls of the game. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian then called a toss play to Quintrevion Wisner, which was blown up for a loss of seven. On 3rd-and-goal from the eight, Ewers tossed an incomplete pass, and then was strip-sacked by his former roommate at Ohio State, Jack Sawyer.
Not only did Sawyer knock the ball out, but he took it 83 yards for a touchdown to make it 28-14. After the game, Sawyer was asked about the moment between him and Ewers, and revealed that Ewers had a simple two-word message to him about the play.
"Yeah I did," Sawyer said when asked if he was able to talk to Ewers about the play. " He was walking off and said 'screw you.' and started laughing. You know that 's my boy. Obviously, we were roommates when he was here. Got a lot of respect for him and the Texas team..."
Ewers overcame a slow start to the game, which again had fans calling for Arch Manning to replace him, but came up one yard short of allowing the Texas defense to get another pivotal stop. In what is likely Ewers' final game, he finished 22-of-39 for 283 yards and two touchdowns, with a late interception.
As for Sawyer, who was named defensive MVP, he finished with three total tackles and the sack he took for a score.
