Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables had a bold take after his team lost 34–26 to No. 7 Ole Miss (7-1, 4-1 SEC). He said No. 18 Oklahoma (6-2, 2-2) was “the better team.” That comment did not go unnoticed. Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin fired back quickly. And he did it with the sharp tone he is known for.
“Interesting take. That’s a hot take,” Kiffin said. Then he took it a step further. He reminded everyone of a few painful results from Venables’ past.
“Maybe they had the better team last year, too,” he said. Kiffin then brought up Oklahoma’s 55–19 loss to USC in the national championship while Kiffin was the Trojans’ offensive coordinator. He was also sure to mention Clemson as his Alabama team beat the Tigers 45–40 when Venables was their defensive coordinator. The message was clear—Kiffin believes results matter more than excuses.
For Venables, that is a fair point. He entered the 2025 season on the hot seat. Oklahoma expects championships, but his first three seasons ended below Oklahoma expectations. With a record of 22-17, that is not good enough in Norman, Okla. Now he sits at 6–2 with four games left. His team has shown improvement, yet the pressure continues to rise.
Talking about being the “better team” after a loss is never a good look. Especially with a fan base that demands wins. Venables has a chance to cool down his critics, but he must finish strong. If the Sooners stumble late again, his seat will only get hotter.
Kiffin’s comments may sting and might even fuel Oklahoma, but the best response for Venables is simple. Stop talking—start winning. The next four weeks will decide his future. Meanwhile, Kiffin has a path to the College Football Playoff if the Rebels keep winning.
