Kirby Smart Embraces Georgia’s Biggest Question Mark

Don’t expect Kirby Smart to push back against criticism of Georgia’s wide receiver room. Instead, he’s embracing it.

During SEC Media Days, Smart was asked about preseason concerns surrounding the Bulldogs’ receiving corps—a position many analysts have labeled one of Georgia’s biggest question marks entering the 2026 season.

Rather than defending the group, Smart thanked the reporter.

The Georgia coach specifically expressed appreciation for reporter Steve Wiltfong’s assessment that wide receiver is a major question mark, saying comments like that give him something to show his players throughout fall camp.

For Smart, outside opinions aren’t distractions. They’re fuel.

It’s a familiar tactic from the coach who has built Georgia into one of college football’s premier programs. Whether it’s rankings, predictions or criticism from the media, Smart has long looked for ways to create an edge by convincing his team it still has something to prove.

This year’s receiving room enters the season with plenty to answer. Georgia lost experienced playmakers from last season, and several younger receivers will be expected to take on significantly larger roles. The Bulldogs have talent, but many of those players have yet to consistently produce in SEC games.

That’s why the position has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding Georgia’s offense heading into the fall.

Smart, however, appears more interested in turning that narrative into motivation than debating whether it’s fair.

If the Bulldogs’ receivers emerge as one of the strengths of the offense this season, don’t be surprised if Smart remembers exactly where the doubts started.

For now, Georgia’s head coach is happy to let everyone keep asking questions. In his mind, every headline questioning the receivers is another message he can deliver inside the locker room before practice begins.
