The Georgia Bulldogs running back Cash Jones has had a quieter role in the run game to kick off the 2025 college football season, but that doesn't mean his overall impact has gone unnoticed in head coach Kirby Smart's eyes.
During this week's SEC call, coach Smart was asked about Jones' usage versus the Tennessee Volunteers and whether or not his lack of offensive snaps had something to do with an injury.
"He's doing a great job," Smart said. "He played more special team snaps. I think anybody on the team, he's been a major factor on our punt team, block punt block team. He blocked a punt, and he's big factor on pump punt return. So he does a tremendous job. He played also third downs, and had a huge pickup on third down. And that's where his best role is it's two minute back, and as a third down back, he's done a really good job of those two things, so no he's not dealing with any injury or anything like that."
Jones played just 16 offensive snaps and 15 special teams snaps in the Bulldogs' 44-41 overtime win over the Vols. He logged one carry for seven yards and hauled in two passes for 13 yards. According to Pro Football Focus, he earned an overall grade of 66.4.
Georgia relied heavily on Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens in the rushing attack against Tennessee. Gunner Stockton also showed off his legs. That's just how the game plan played out, though it doesn't mean we won't see Jones having his day in the run game sometime this season.
Until then, we can expect Smart to continue using Cash's dual-threat abilities in both the passing and run game on critical third downs and special teams.
